I was a bride married to amazement.
I was a bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.
Mary Oliver (from When Death Comes)
There was no silken white runner
no candles on the altar
no scripture or rings
no Pachelbel's Canon
or distant relatives there
mostly for the reception
Only the sandy path
bounded on each side
by cranberry bogs
like pews on which sat
the Canada Geese
friends of both bride and groom
The bright blue Smooth Aster -
Symphyotrichum laeve
stood witness in all their
autumn glory
Barn Swallows danced
to some silent song
that could not be found
in the D.J.‘s collection
I stood in amazement
taking the world into my arms
met there at Nature’s altar
by the I Am
all that was said in turn was “I do”
